About the NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)

"The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the REU program. "

About the REU Sites

Site I: Training Undergraduates in Electrochemical Technologies for Clean Fuels (Biofuels and Hydrogen) Production and Applications
Project Period: 09/01/2016-08/31/2019
Investigators: Xiaoyu Zhang (PI), Sandeep Kumar (Co-PI)

This REU Site at Old Dominion University (ODU) engages undergraduate students traditionally underrepresented in STEM fields in hands-on research in the fields of electrochemical clean fuel production and applications, including solar fuel production, biofuels upgrading and production, and fuel cell materials and applications. The U.S. pioneered the development of these technologies, and continues to lead the way from laboratories to commercial markets. However there is a general lack of understanding and awareness of these technologies in the public and also among the stakeholders. This REU Site will help in educating and preparing undergraduate students in this area and play a role in the development of energy professionals for a sustainable society.

This REU Site offers opportunities for undergraduate students, working with faculty mentors and industry professionals, to engage in multidisciplinary electrochemical clean fuel research activities during a 10-week summer program. In addition to active energy research projects mentored by faculty from the College of Engineering, students will participate in research seminars, workshops on writing and communications training, field trips to industries related to clean energy, and career development activities. Recruitment of REU Site participants will target 12 collaborating institutions which include Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and undergraduate institutions with limited STEM research activities.

Site II: Cybersecurity Research in a Multidisciplinary Environment

Period: 3/1/2017 - 2/28/2020
Investigators: Chunsheng Xin, Khan Iftekharudin, Wu He, Jiang Li

Cybersecurity is a priority area of national need. As a multidisciplinary field, cybersecurity requires that the professionals have knowledge and skills in various disciplines. The objective of this REU program is to establish a multidisciplinary learning and research environment for undergraduate students, to explore a variety of cybersecurity topics across multiple disciplines. Each student will work on a REU project advised by a multidisciplinary mentoring committee composed of a mentor, a co-mentor, and one or more members from multiple disciplines. During the REU program, the Friday of each week is dedicated to promote multidisciplinary collaborations through seminars and social activities such as career panel and field trips. The REU site program offers unique multidisciplinary learning and research opportunities for undergraduate students in an inherently multidisciplinary cybersecurity discipline. The students will master research methodologies and obtain valuable research experiences in an area of critical national need, and also better prepare for graduate studies.

Site III: Climate Change

Period: TBD
